Does the university entrance score have high predictive validity?

January 25, 2020

Every year thousands of students are fretting over whether they have enough points to gain admission to their desired university. However, is the nationally standardized university entrance score a good measure to make admission decisions based on it? Our colleagues, Marcell Nagy and Roland Molontay analyzed this question based on the data of 21,547 undergraduate students from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. The authors find that the current Hungarian centralized entrance score is a valid predictor, however, its predictive validity varies significantly across disciplines. The research has been published in Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education, the 3rd best-ranked journal in higher education according to Google.
