Our New Study Tracks How the World Talked About the Olympics for 16 Years

May 8, 2026

We are pleased to announce the publication of our lab's new article. Our latest paper, titled “From Beijing to Paris: Media Representation and Sentiment Dynamics of the Olympics and Paralympics Across Traditional and Social Platforms (2008–2024),” has been published in the International Journal of Sports Science & Coaching.

In this large-scale study, we analyze over 140,000 pieces of content spanning five Olympic cycles, from the 2008 Beijing Games to the 2024 Paris Olympics. The research examines data from traditional media giants (The New York Times, The Guardian) and major social media platforms (YouTube, Reddit) to understand how the global conversation has evolved over the years.

Using state-of-the-art Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods, including BERTopic and fine-tuned RoBERTa models, we have uncovered several key trends. Our findings highlight the increasing polarization of traditional media narratives, the growing diversity of opinions on social media, and the persistent disparities in coverage between the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Congratulations to the authors, Maria Amaro and Dr. Roland Molontay, on this fantastic and in-depth collaboration.
