From a Semester in Budapest to the ICWSM Stage in Los Angeles: Our Lab's Meme Research Goes Global

June 5, 2026

We are delighted to share that a research project born out of a semester-long visit to our laboratory was presented at the AAAI International Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM) in Los Angeles, one of the most prestigious venues for social media and computational social science research.

In 2025, Tri An Le joined our laboratory through the AIT-Budapest Research Abroad Program as a student of Wabash College. During his semester with us, he began working on a research project under the supervision of Dr. Roland Molontay and Donát Köller. After returning to Wabash College, he continued developing the project with the support of Qixin Deng, ultimately bringing the work to completion through a collaboration spanning two institutions and two continents.

The resulting paper, "MemeMatch: A Large-Scale Dual-Context Multimodal Dataset and Retrieval System for Internet Memes," presents a large-scale multimodal dataset and retrieval system aimed at enabling a better understanding and analysis of internet memes.

This collaboration serves as a compelling example of the value of international research mentorship: a student arrives for a single semester, develops a promising idea, and ultimately presents their results on a leading international stage. We are also pleased to share that Tri An is continuing his studies in a doctoral program, and we wish him every success in his future research career.

Congratulations to Tri An and his co-authors, Donát Köller, Qixin Deng, and Dr. Roland Molontay, on this outstanding achievement!
